Field Trip

Went to the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum. They had planes from World War 2, which we had read about. The Space section was mostly about the space program but there were pictures of planets and things in space. Hank did get to hold a meteorite.

BATTLE OF SALERNO

BATTLE OF SALERNO

The Battle of Salerno was battle in World War II that took place during September 9th, 1943 and September, 16th, 1943.
It was part of Operation Avalanche, which was part of the Allied Invasion of Italy.
The Allied commander was Mark Wayne Clark and the Axis commander was Heinrich von Vietinghoff.
The battle was meant to be a surprise.
When the 36th Infantry Division got close to shore they were greeted with a loud speakerphone saying “Come on in and give up. We have you covered.” They attacked anyway.
Some divisions met opposition and some didn't
The Luftwaffe began bombardment shortly after 4 A.M. on the 9th of September
Germany was able to get reinforcements, while America could not.
85 Allied vessels were hit by German bombs off the Salerno shore.

There were 13,713 Allies wounded, dead or missing. And there were 3,445 Germans wounded, dead or missing.
